If you are in Australia on a working holiday visa, you should be aware of your rights as an employee and how to report any concerns about unfair or unlawful treatment.

Thousands of British working holidaymakers visit Australia each year, with the vast majority having a pleasant stay. Working conditions, housing, and medical facilities are generally of high quality.

Following an inquiry into the wages and conditions of people working under the working holiday visa program, the Fair Work Ombudsman published a report in October 2016 that highlighted exploitative workplace cultures in which unreasonable and unlawful requirements were imposed in some isolated and remote workplaces.

However, if you have any concerns about your workplace conditions or treatment, call the Fair Work Ombudsman at 13 13 94. You can also report concerns to them anonymously.

If you believe your employer is treating you unfairly or illegally, you can contact the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) at the British High Commission in Canberra, Australia.WHVreferrals@fcdo.gov.uk.

The NCA is collaborating with a number of Australian authorities to identify and address any illegal employer behavior that affects British nationals.

Before you travel to Australia, make sure you have comprehensive medical insurance. Treatment costs can be prohibitively expensive if you are not covered by the reciprocal healthcare arrangements that exist between Australia and the United Kingdom.
