Some study programs include work experience as part of their curriculum. If you meet all of the following requirements, you may apply for a co-op or intern work permit in Canada:

  • You have a valid study permit.
  • Applicants must work in order to complete their studies in Canada.
  • You have a letter from your school confirming that all students in your program are required to complete work placements in order to graduate.
  • Your co-op placement or internship accounts for 50% or less of your study program.

You may not need to apply for a co-op work permit from November 15, 2022, to December 31, 2023. If you meet all of the following conditions, you do not need a co-op work permit to complete your co-op placement: Internships, Work, And Study in Canada!

  • You have a valid study permit, and we received your study permit application on or before October 7, 2022.
  • Your study permit certifies that you are permitted to work off-campus.
  • You are eligible to take advantage of the temporary policy change that allows you to work more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session.
  • Your co-op assignment will end on December 31, 2023.

If your co-op placement ends after December 31, 2023, or if you are ineligible for the temporary policy change, you must apply for a co-op work permit for the period following that date. You can begin your co-op placement during this time before receiving your permit. Any other jobs you have will not be affected.

Who Is Not Eligible?

You are not eligible for a co-op work permit if you are enrolled in one of the following courses:

  1. English or French as second language (ESL/FSL),
  2. general interest courses, or
  3. courses to prepare for another study program.

If you are not eligible for a co-op work permit but want to work in Canada, you must apply for a work permit.
