He was famous for really backing public schools, especially the University of Alberta, and for being really involved in things that helped the community.
Rutherford Scholarship Award
The Alexander Rutherford scholarship, an the Alberta Government scholarship, acknowledges and rewards high school students for their academic excellence.
This scholarship was named in honour of Alexander Rutherford, who was the Alberta’s first Premier and Minister of Education. He was known for his strong support of public education, particularly the University of Alberta and his active involvement in things that concerns the community.

Once Alberta Student Aid gets your application, they’ll forward it to the university for confirmation every few weeks. At MacEwan, they’ll start confirming the scholarship after each term’s add/drop deadline. If you’ve applied for Alberta student loans and the Alexander Rutherford scholarship, both will be confirmed at the same time.
Once confirmed, Alberta Student Aid will send you the scholarship money as a check directly.

Purpose of Rutherford Scholarship Award
The purpose of this scholarship is to reward and recognize academic achievement of senior high school students and encourage them to pursue post-secondary studies.

Eligibility Requirements
Apply when you have your official high school transcript marks and are enrolled full-time in post-secondary studies. The specific requirements for high school transcript marks may differ.
To receive this Rutherford scholarship award, you must also meet all of these eligibility criteria:
- Must be a Canadian Citizen, a Permanent Resident of Canada or Protected Person underCanada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, (Nite: Visa students are not eligible).
- must be an Alberta resident ; To qualify as an Alberta resident for the Alexander Rutherford scholarship, you need to meet these conditions:
- One parent or legal guardian must have lived in Canada for at least 12 consecutive months before you start your studies.
- You must have lived in Alberta for at least 12 months before starting your studies.
- For any grade-based scholarship, you or your parent(s)/legal guardian must have been an Alberta resident throughout that entire grade.
- Completed high school after September 30, 1980.
- Enrolled in a full course load in an eligible undergraduate or apprenticeship program for at least one semester.
Note: Graduate studies and certain professional programs like medicine or veterinary medicine aren’t eligible for this scholarship.
You can only receive the Alexander Rutherford scholarship once.
Rutherford Scholarship Award Selection Processes
Interested student must have a minimum combined average based on five designated courses in at least one grade. The grades are: Grade 10, 11 or 12 as calculated from:
- Alberta Residents
Courses/marks on an official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement - Completed High School Outside Alberta
Courses/marks that appear on an official high school transcript attained in another province
When applying for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship, students will be automatically considered for additional awards. No separate application is needed for these particular awards below:

- Dr. Ernest and Minnie Mehl Scholarship
How to Apply for Rutherford Scholarship aAward
Submitting Your Application for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship, follow this step:
- Apply online: Every student needs a verified account to use the Alberta Student Aid system. To set up your account, visit the “How to Apply” section for detailed step-by-step instructions and helpful videos.
- Always have access to your account information: Student Aid recommends that you use your personal email address, rather than your school email address, to create/verify your Alberta student aid account.
- Grant Parent/Guardian Access to Your Secure Account: Your parent(s)/guardian may want to assist you with aspects of your student aid/scholastic awards. Therefore, to grant access to application information in your secure account, complete a Consent to Disclose form or assign a Power of Attorney. The forms are available in the Applications and Forms section.
Steps to Apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship Award
Student can apply once your official high school transcript marks are available and when you are enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies. However, requirements for high school transcript marks will vary.
Step 1: Student Aid recommends you apply when:
- You will attend full-time post-secondary studies between August 1, 2023 and July 31, 2024.
Note: You must be currently enrolled in full-time undergraduate studies to qualify to receive this scholarship. - Your official high school transcripts are ready and available.
- Make sure you’ve finished all your high school upgrading credit courses before applying since you can only submit your application once, and you’ll want to include your best grades. Remember, your high school upgrading credit courses need to be listed on an official Alberta High School Transcript of Achievement; and
- You have finished high school on or after September 30, 1980.
Step 2: Login to your Alberta Student Aid account and choose the Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship in the Apply section.
